As the temperatures heated up in Sewickley, so did the Carlynton Tennis team, as they finished play against the Section with an impressive showing, and the top team of Prepelka/Ad. Engleka advancing to the next round of the AA WPIAL Doubles Playoffs.

The Cougars received favorable draws from the #5 (Prepelka/Ad. Engleka) and #10 (And. Engleka /Beglinger) and won their first round matchups against two athletic McGuffey squads. Carlynton’s 2nd team unforutnately ran into a formidable Quaker Valley team (#2 Seed overall) and fell 10-1.

In the Quarterfinals, the Cougars top team squared off against the 2nd Doubles team from Winchester Thurston (#4 Overall) and jumped out to an early 6-0 in the set. The Bears fought back, and eventually took the lead at 8-7, and again at 9-8. The Juniors did not quit, and regained the lead in the set at 10-9. After a dispute in the score (The game was reset to 30 All) Carlyton finished off WT, and won 11-9. The celebration was short, however, and the boys went on to lose to the overall #1 Seed from Quaker Valley in straight sets.

After playing 3 straight matches, fatgiue was starting to set in, but one final match was needed to determine seeding in the next round of the playoffs, so Engleka & Prepelka stepped onto the courts one final time, playing another Winchester Thurston team, seeded #3 overall. They ultimately lost this match in two sets, and their position was set as the #4 Doubles Team playing out of AA – Section 4. The duo will travel next Tuesday (4/27) to North Allegheny High School to play in the 2nd Round of the WPIAL Doubles Playoffs.

The entire Carlynton Boys Team qualified for the WPIAL Playoffs by finishing 4th overall in the Section, and should learn their opponent by the beginning of next week.
