Carlynton and Ligonier Valley were matched up in round one of the PIAA state playoffs. After a two week layoff the Cougars didn’t take long to shake off the rust. Carlynton had a five point advantage after one and a ten point advantage at the half. The second half started well with the Cougars pushing their lead to 14 points before some questionable officiating flipped the game. Leading by 9 midway through the 3rd quarter Senior Guard Chauncie Mickens was called for 3 bad fouls over a minute span thus fouling the team’s leading scoring out of the contest. LV took advantage of the Mickens departure by erasing the Cougar lead and taking a one point advantage into quarter 4. The Cougars rallied for their senior teammate as the rest of the squad blitzed LV with an offensive barrage led by Kerr, Phillips and Canton. With Mickens on the bench the trio of Kerr, Phillips and Canton scored 11, 9 & 8 points in the final quarter. The Cougars pushed their lead to 11 with one minute remaining before the officials again made some poor calls. Ault was called for a foul on a three point attempt and then accessed a technical. LV converted 4 of the 5 free throws and hit a three point FG on the next possession. The Cougar lead was all but erased in a matter of seconds. The Cougars did not waiver hitting clutch free throws down the stretch and securing victory.

The Cougars advance to face Beaver Falls on Wednesday March 11th, site to be determined.
